Freyberg High School’s 2025 production of Mary Poppins was practically perfect in every way - a spectacular celebration of our students’ talent, creativity, and hard work that delighted audiences across its near sold-out season.

Months of hardwork culminated in a busy but rewarding week of shows and the cast and crew built a strong bond through shared dinners, games, and activities before each performance. This sense of camaraderie carried onto the stage, creating a warmth and connection that audiences could feel in every scene.

The magic of Cherry Tree Lane came to life with stunning performances, vibrant choreography, and show-stopping musical numbers. Not many schools still use a live band and Freyberg is proud to have had such an accomplished band accompany the musical. Rave reviews poured in from audience members, praising the professionalism of the cast, crew and band, the attention to detail in sets and costumes, and the overall impact of the production.

A standout feature of the show was the impressive use of an LED screen with dynamic images designed by Year 13 student William Lyne, who also starred as Bert. This technology transformed the stage with dynamic backdrops and special effects, showcasing the ingenuity of our students.

The production was heavily student-led, with students taking on roles as choreographers, directors, vocal assistants, programme designers, marketers, and involved with every aspect back-stage. Their leadership and creativity drove the production forward and gave the show its distinct Freyberg flavour.

Across the five-night season, an incredible 1,253 tickets were sold - a testament to the community’s enthusiasm and support for the arts at Freyberg. The show was a true community effort, with staff, students, alumni, and whānau pitching in to build sets, sew and alter costumes, operate technical equipment, and coordinate the countless moving parts.

As the final note faded and the applause thundered, one thing was clear - Mary Poppins was more than just a school show. It was a testament to the creativity, teamwork, and excellence that define Freyberg High School.
